Pequot Lakes girl is waiting for a mentor

Before a child is enrolled in Kinship Partners and the search for a mentor begins, a thorough interview is done with the parent/guardian and child.

We discuss topics such as interests, family background, academic performance and the child’s health history. Another revealing question asked of every child is, “Why do you want a Kinship Partner?”

Brainerd YMCA offers American Health & Safety Institute CPR course

The Brainerd Family YMCA will offer an American Health and Safety Institute (AHSI) CPR course for the community and the workplace from 6:15-9:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the YMCA.

Participants will learn to recognize and respond to the signals of heart attack, cardiac arrest and stroke as well as other medical emergencies for adults, children and infants including obstructed airway (choking), allergic reactions and drowning. 

Participants will earn a two-year certification card. 

Dianna Jenkins, a certified instructor with AHSI, will teach the class.

Additional SilverSneakers classes available at Crosslake Community Center starting April 1

Because of high demand, two additional SilverSneakers classes will be offered starting Monday, April 1, at the Crosslake Community Center.

Starting Monday, classes will be offered from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

The Crosslake Community Center recognizes the unique needs of older adults in the community by partnering with the nationally recognized Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program. The community center offers older adults a way to increase their levels of physical activity while motivating them to remain active.

Pequot Lakes Woman's Club April meeting

The Pequot Lakes Woman’s Club will meet for lunch at 12 noon on Thursday, April 4 at Timberjack Restaurant. Members are encouraged to bring a guest, and all area women are welcome. The agenda includes discussion on the Miss Pequot Lakes Scholarship Pageant award, advertising benches in the City of Pequot Lakes, and annual donations to local charities.

Breezy Point Area Women's Club to meet April 3

The Breezy Point Area Women’s Club will hold its next monthly meeting Wednesday, April 3.

A catered lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. at the Pelican Lake Conservation Club and the program will consist of a presentation by Pequot Lakes Fire Chief Tom Nelson and Breezy Point police officer and First Responder Jason Reiber.

Hostesses are Wanda Sonderby and Carol Wohlers. Any guests wishing to attend should call 218-562-4113.

Summer residents on East Clark Lake Road in Lake Edward Township will be in for a surprise when they come back this spring. They’ll find the trees that formed a canopy along the winding, sandy road have been chopped down for a road widening and blacktopping project.

The Nisswa Inn will re-open on Thursday, April 5, under the management of Christine Cronk, formerly owner-operator of the Colony Inn, Lakeshore Village.

Volunteers have been trained and certified by the IRS and state of Minnesota to assist in preparing federal and state income tax returns. Help to prepare Minnesota property tax or renters refund will also be available. This program is co-sponsored by the IRS, state of Minnesota and AARP.

Al Cheney, Nisswa Chief of Police, announced his resignation this week effective Friday, March 23. He headed the police force for three years and will return to Hutchinson to resume his former job as a patrolman.

The federal government cautioned last week that gasoline is likely to be in short supply this summer, but that it does not expect to resort to contingency plans for rationing or restricted use.
