Right now many of our students are receiving their first academic report cards of the school year. But what would our students “support cards” look like?
Research shows that students are more motivated, self-confident, have better study habits and have an improved ability to learn and test when they feel supported by their schools, family and community.
The study goes on to say, “Students don’t care what you can teach them until they know that you care about them.”
It is widely accepted by numerous research studies that youth benefit significantly by having a mentor in their lives. Mentors provide youth with the confidence, resources, continuity and support they need to achieve their potential. Alec is a fourth-grader and lives in the Crosslake-Ideal area. His mom describes him as a boy with a big heart who loves to help. He is inquisitive and a problem-solver. He needs help in the classroom and believes that school work is too hard, especially math and reading.
Alec says he has been teased a lot, but admits that it is going better this year. At times he is hesitant to try new experiences and his mom hopes that a caring mentor can give him a gentle nudge to step outside his comfort zone.
But Alec’s eyes sparkle when he talks about riding four-wheelers or horses and catching snakes. He likes campfires, fishing and tents, as well as the family pets.
Could you help improve Alec’s “support card?” Dedicating a few hours every week to Alec will help foster his self-esteem and open his mind to new opportunities.
Relationships play a huge role in strengthening education and promoting youth development. This support influences their mastery of the skills and habits that make them successful in school and life. No child gets there alone.
