Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota honored several businesses and individuals from five local counties with special awards at the 11th Annual Project Council Banquet on Oct. 15 in Brainerd. Each year, the event is a celebration that honors outstanding community supporters and recognizes program accomplishments across Cass, Wadena, Crow Wing, Morrison and Todd counties.
This year, the following recipients were recognized with the Apple Pie Award, which honors businesses for their contributions to the well-being of seniors served through the LSS Senior Nutrition program.
Cass County: Pine River Family Market and owners Chuck and Lynn Welte
Morrison County: Farmers & Merchants State Bank in Pierz and Little Falls Police Department
Todd County: Treasured Treats Cookies in Eagle Bend
Wadena County: Carol Waaraniemi, Cottage House Café in Menahga
Crow Wing County: Good Neighbor Home Care at Northstar Apartments in Brainerd
Outstanding volunteers were also recognized with the Volunteer Hall of Fame Award at the event. The winners this year are Arlene Crone of Pine River, Rick Hest of Eagle Bend, and Becky Snow of Walker.
“We are deeply grateful for the good neighbors and many local businesses that help us ensure good nutrition and health among seniors in our community,” said Terri Weyer, program manager for Lutheran Social Service. “They are all so important to the service we provide every day.”
LSS Senior Nutrition, celebrating 40 years of service, is funded in part by a contract from the Central Minnesota Council on Aging with funding from the Federal Older Americans Act through the Minnesota Board on Aging. Additional funds are provided by the State of Minnesota, United Ways, local communities and other contributions.
