75 years ago, Sept. 23, 1938

From the Pine River Journal

Due to an increased amount of work in the commercial printing department of the Journal, we have found it necessary to advance the publication date to Friday, giving us an additional day in the fore part of the week.

The Pine River school now boasts an enrollment of 581, the largest in its history. Students are carried to school from outlying districts by 12 modern buses, with a new bus driven by Elias Rovik on Rt. 2.

50 years ago, Sept. 22, 1963

At the regular Monday meeting of the Pine River Chamber of Commerce, plans were disclosed for a Whoop-it-up Carnival Day to be held in Pine River on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Mrs. Karl Rolvaag told the group some of the enjoyable — and not so enjoyable — aspects of being a governor’s wife, at a meeting in Pine River recently. One anecdote revealed her emotions at being awakened at an early hour to be asked by a sweet feminine reporter’s voice, “Do you think purses are a luxury?”

25 years ago, Sept. 15, 1988

Horseshoe pits were started this spring at Pine River in the park and are completed now. Enthusiasts can be found in the evening having tournaments between the different towns.

From the Pine River Journal

The Pine River Tom Thumb gas station and convenience store closed its doors at the end of the business day Sept. 11.

Two local residents were injured Sept. 9 when their plane crashed about 10 miles east of Pine River.
