It is said that “good things come to those that wait.”
In the case of Emily, who had been waiting since last August for a Kinship mentor, it is hoped that this saying rings true!
Earlier this month, Emily met her new mentor – a woman who shares her love for theatre, music, baking and biking. Hopefully, this discouraging year spent waiting for a mentor will be replaced with new experiences and a new adult friend with which to share them.
A father, who has had two daughters on the Kinship waiting list since February, asked why more mentors don’t come forward. In the past year there have been 15 new matches in the Lake Country office, serving the Pequot Lakes and Pine River-Backus school districts.
Currently there are eight children from this area waiting for mentors. This number will increase when schools open in the fall. There are 51 children matched with an individual, couple or family mentoring partnership.
Kinship explains to the parent or guardian that finding a good match may take time. A thorough background check and interview are done on each mentor and an effort is made to match partners with similar interests and in close proximity to one another.
But, in all reality, Kinship needs more caring adults to step up and consider the important role of becoming a mentor. A Kinship mentor is an ordinary person who has a soft spot for kids. Some of the best times shared between partners are activities done within the mentor’s own home – preparing a meal together, working on a craft project, pulling weeds in the garden or playing a game. Can you be that person?
Consider this your personal invitation. Or, share the Kinship message with another family member, friend or work colleague. Let’s reassure these children waiting for mentors that the wait will soon be over and, indeed, good things are on the way!
