Help a child make fun summer memories

Posted: August 20, 2013 - 6:01pm

About this time every summer the days might be getting a little long for some children. Boredom. Sibling squabbles. TV reruns.

Many are already thinking about getting back to school, anticipating the return of friends and new backpacks.

But there is still time to make some summer memories that will give these children waiting for Kinship mentors plenty to talk about in the fall.

The biggest objections voiced by many potential mentors are having the extra time to spend with a child and figuring out how to entertain this child. The good news is that you don’t need to squeeze in more hours or become an activity coordinator. Choose some fun, healthy activities that you already enjoy and bring along a child to share the fun.

Recently Kinship asked some of its kids what they have enjoyed most with their mentors. The answers might surprise you.

Jimmy enjoyed picking up sticks after a storm with his mentor and he even got to drive the lawn tractor. Sara told me about the county fair and seeing the rabbit pens.

Ollie likes to walk the dog. Aaron tagged along to the store and they looked at rows upon rows of fishing tackle.

Trent helped build a loon nest and they paddle out often to check on the residents. Laura helped plant a garden. Kira enjoyed sampling food with her mentor at a local big box store.

Do you do any or all of these things? Imagine how fun it is seeing the world through the eyes of a child again!

If you have a soft spot for kids and think this might be something for you, take a look at the Kinship website at www.kinshippartners.org or call your local Kinship office. Kinship staff will be happy to answer your questions in an honest way and not pressure you into making a decision until you are ready.

Right now there are about 40 kids waiting for mentors throughout the Brainerd lakes area.

Kinship Partners serves families in Crow Wing and southern Cass counties and the Staples/Motley area by providing positive role models to youth ages 5 to 14. Kinship has offices in Pequot Lakes, Brainerd, Crosby and Staples.
