Walk-in school immunization set Aug. 22 in Brainerd

Posted: August 13, 2013 - 6:24pm

Crow Wing County Community Services Health Division will offer a walk-in school immunization clinic from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Crow Wing County Community Services Health Division, 204 Laurel St., Suite 12, Brainerd.

This clinic is for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in need of vaccinations to attend school, as well as immunizations recommended for their age. No appointment is needed.

Shots are $5 each; however, no one is denied access because of inability to pay. Medical Assistance or Minnesota Care is accepted as payment, so bring cards. If your health insurance pays for vaccinations, you must be seen by your home medical clinic.

When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk for disease and can spread disease to others in their classroom and community, including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer and other health conditions.

Schools are highly susceptible to outbreaks of infectious diseases because students can easily transmit illnesses to one another as a result of poor hand washing, uncovered coughs and dense populations.

Children ages 4 to 6 are due for boosters of four vaccines: DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), chickenpox, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and polio. Older children, like preteens and teens, need Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), MCV (meningococcal conjugate vaccine) and HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccines.

A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for all children ages 6 months and older.

A parent or legal guardian and a complete shot record are required to accompany the student or shots may not be given. If your child has a special medical problem and cannot be vaccinated or if you as a parent are conscientiously opposed to immunizations, you may receive a legal exemption.

Crow Wing County Community Services Health Division also holds clinics on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month by appointment throughout the year. For more information, call Margie at 218-824-1098 or Stephanie at 218-824-1079.
