Rug hooking school planned in July in Crosslake

Posted: May 9, 2013 - 4:54pm

The 12th annual Northern Lights Rug Hooking School will be held July 23-26 at Crosslake Lutheran Church.

Mary Johnson from Designs in Wool, Sally Kallin from Pine Island Primitives, and Cathy Tokheim from Old Friends Woolens will teach rug hooking technique and color planning.

Johnson has been rug hooking since 1998 when her sister, Carol Dunn, camp director, talked her into trying it. She started a rug hooking business in 2003 while living in Illinois and it has followed her to Minnesota and California. See her designs and a sampling of her wool at www.designsinwool.com and www.etsy.com/shop/DesignsInWool.

Kallin has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art and 20 years of experience as an award-winning graphic designer. Pine Island Primitives was started in 2001. See her designs and a sampling of her wool at www.pineislandprimitives.com.

Tokheim learned rug hooking from Jill Rotterman in 1998. Old Friends Woolens specializes in custom designs, over-dyed wool and rug, punch needle and whimsy patterns. See her designs and a sampling of her wool at www.etsy.com/shop/oldfriendswoolens.

There are still a few openings available in the classes. Contact Carol Dunn at 218-675-5524 or carolrae.dunn@gmail.com for information.

A rug show, open to the public, is planned from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, July 26. There will be wool fabric and patterns available for sale.

Come and vote for your favorite rug and join the group for coffee and cookies.
