A fire gutted Gardiner Hardware store in Pine River. At one time during the battle, it was feared that the blaze might engulf the entire block. Pine River and Pequot Lakes fire departments responded, as well as part of the Brainerd force.

The Pequot Lakes Fire Department was called to the Roland Fischer home two miles east of Pequot Lakes at 11:15 p.m. Sunday after the Fischers narrowly escaped with their lives when their home burst into flame.
