Emily mining project will be topic of LWV meeting

Posted: January 8, 2013 - 6:31pm

Char Kinzer, Crow Wing Power public relations manager, will present a program about the mining of manganese from a site near Emily at the League of Women Voters of the Brainerd Lakes Area meeting at noon Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Brainerd Public Library.

Crow Wing Power is in the process of obtaining approval for the bore-hole process, which uses existing groundwater. According to the plans, if all the environmental tests return positive, it would take five years to extract the manganese from the site.

The manganese deposit near Emily is the largest in North America and recently had been pursued by foreign interests.

The program is open to the public.
