The PAL Foundation of Crosslake recently recognized the volunteers at the Crosslake Clothes Closet for their service to the community .

In total, these volunteers have given more than 100 years of service to the community.

The Clothes Closet began in January 1996, when a group of women from area churches worked together to open the closet in the basement of the former city hall. The Clothes Closet was the brainchild of Joyce Smyth and “Dodo” Fraser. These two started the used clothes service with the help of six community churches: The Log Church, Crosslake Lutheran, Mission of the Cross Lutheran, Faith Lutheran, Immaculate Heart Catholic Church and Crosslake Presbyterian.

The Clothes Closet has been provided donated space throughout its history. Initially, the closet was in the basement of the former city hall. Then it used the basement of the Lakes State Bank building for 13 years and now has been provided space in Dan and Judy Knobbe’s building on Ox Landing Road.

Since the clothes are given away, there is no income and the Clothes Closet can operate only through donated space and volunteer work.

The Clothes Closet is staffed by a group of volunteers who have worked together for a long time, some even from the beginning 16 years ago. They serve with good spirits and a happy heart and have formed strong friendships over this long time.

Volunteers Marge Wiessner, Cindy Bourassa, Patty Bourassa, Doris Mezzenga, Jan and Gene Darnell, Darlene Camacho, Darlene Roach, Julle Middlestadt, Vivian Kinnan, Ruth Hoag, Arlyn Carlson, “Bebop” DeTunque, Dannette Raph, “Dodo” and Leo Fraser work together to distribute used clothes to those in need.

The Clothes Closet is open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and the first and third Thursdays of the month from 5-8 p.m.

Donations of clothing, shoes and household goods are given to families of the area.
