In October, Essentia Health helped a record number 991 people in the Brainerd lakes community take an important step in the fight against breast cancer – early detection through a mammogram.
The accredited Breast Imaging Centers at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd and Essentia Health St. Joseph’s-Baxter Clinic offer two locations for a 15-minute appointment.
Any woman over age 40 can call and schedule a mammogram. In the past, they needed an order from a doctor or nurse practitioner. This screening should not replace an annual physical that helps monitor and detect other health issues.
If cost is a factor, staff work with the Minnesota SAGE program to determine if women are eligible for a free physical and mammogram. To find out if you qualify, call 218-454-5935.
Essentia Health follows American Cancer Society guidelines that recommend annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40 for most women. Those at a higher risk or with a family history of breast cancer should talk with their doctor about when to begin mammograms.
Schedule a screening mammogram by calling 218-828-7646. Appointments are available from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at both Essentia Health locations.
