Usually it’s the children who follow their parents when they move.

In this case, Lynn and John Biwer followed their daughter and son-in-law, Katie and Mike Wagener, to the lakes area in 1997.

Mike and Katie had always dreamed of owning a resort, and when they found Cold Spring Resort off County Road 29 on Upper Gull Lake, they asked Katie’s parents to join them in the venture.

“So they said, ‘How would you like to move to Brainerd?’ And I said, ‘No way!’” Lynn said, noting she wanted to live in Minneapolis where her other children lived.

John “Chip” Lohmiller’s life seems to be a combination of two basic elements: football and fire. The Pequot Lakes High School football coach and former NFL player doubles as the Crosslake fire chief.

“I always wanted to be a fireman,” Chip said of joining the Crosslake department. His dad was a firefighter, he said.

Chip joined the department in 1997, and since then he served eight years as captain and two years as assistant chief before becoming the chief about a year ago, when the late Keith Anderson retired.

Even though Cindy Couture-Noyes was always cutting her own hair, braiding other girls’ hair and giving perms as a teen, becoming a hairstylist wasn’t her first career goal.

Instead, after graduating from Pine River High School (PRHS), Cindy received her associate’s degree from what was then Brainerd Community College (BCC) and then attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth for two years for a teaching degree in physical education and coaching.
