Seth Franco, of the Harlem Globetrotters, visited Pequot Lakes Schools on Friday, Nov. 8, to tell students about how he’s worked hard to achieve his dreams, telling them about his fight against hip dysplasia as a basketball player.

He calls himself the perfect example of how people can achieve their dreams through hard work.

Franco said professional basketball was his dream, which he worked hard for. He kept good grades in school so he could continue to play sports.

“I saw too many people who were really good at their sport but didn’t keep up with school work,” he told students.

Franco has a mild form of hip dysplasia, which went undetected for many years. He had to have surgery to cure the problem, which forced him into a hospital bed. He lost his ability to walk, but the tricks he learned with his hands while in bed later paid off as Franco was given the lead role in a movie about basketball called “Rucker Park.”

Franco was selected to the Harlem Globetrotters in 2003. He was the first Caucasian on the team since 1942.

“Sometimes life gets you down, but you have to have an attitude that bounces back,” Franco told students.
