The Lutheran Church of the Cross Creation Care Team hosted two Eco Summer Camps in August to teach first- through fifth-graders about sustainability and “being green.”

Alicia Green, who has taught children about science and the environment for more than 20 years, conducted the sessions at the Nisswa church. Green has a science teaching license and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry.

The focus was on teaching hands-on, inquiry-based experiments, engineering projects and cutting edge green technology while trying to save the planet.

Topics included discussing the different cycles that occur on the planet, examining the recycling system, learning the powers of the sun by making solar cars, learning about the wonders of wind and harnessing wind power, and spreading awareness of all they learned.

Children who participated planted two community garden plots at the church, practiced yoga poses and met area farmers and ate locally grown foods as a snack.
