On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Brainerd-Pine River will sponsor a radio play at 10 p.m. on KBXE 90.5 FM and KAXE 89.9 FM on the History of the Doctrine of Discovery.

It is the story of the coming of the Europeans to the Americas and its impact on the indigenous native populations. The script was written by Gail Forsyth-Vail, produced by Wayne Leeds of Grand Rapids and features Wayne and Erika Kooda as the two actors in the play.

Katherine Heise, Manningham student poetry winner in the 2012 League of Minnesota Student Contest, attended the League of Minnesota Poets (LOMP) Fall “Poet Laureate Octoberfest” Conference on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Arrowwood Lodge in Baxter.

She read her prize-winning poem, “Bus Ride,” which also won Fourth Honorable Mention in the 2012 National Manningham contest and was published in “The Manningham Poetry Trust - Student Award Winners 2012” chapbook.

Pequot Lakes author Candace Simar will be the featured speaker at the next luncheon meeting of the Breezy Point Area Women’s Club at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Billy’s at Breezy Point.

Simar is a writer and poet. Her series “The Abercrombie Trail Series,” combines her love of history with stories of her Scandinavian heritage.

On Monday, Sept. 24, Central Lakes College (CLC) will host award-winning poet Li-Young Lee as the first guest presenter of the “Verse Like Water: the visiting poet program of Central Lakes College” series produced by the English Department on the Brainerd campus.

Instructor Jeff Johnson, who has coordinated similar national poet readings elsewhere, said the series intends to introduce visiting poets to bring literary life to the college and community. The Center for Lifelong Learning and CLC Foundation are cosponsoring the event.
