Augsburg Centennial Singers to perform Oct. 4 in Longville

Posted: September 24, 2013 - 5:28pm

The Augsburg Centennial Singers will appear in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Salem Lutheran Church in Longville.

Open to the public, the indoor concert will feature familiar hymns, barbershop, folk songs and sacred music selections. A freewill offering will be received.

Directed by Al Reesnes, the 55-member male chorus takes its name in remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the first Augsburg Gospel Quartet to visit Norway in the 1890s. Formed in the 1990s, the chorus has been part of the Twin Cities music scene for more than 20 years.

The Singers was formed to commemorate the Augsburg College Gospel Quartet tradition at the Minneapolis college. The group has made trips to Norway, toured in Florida and made several visits to the southwestern United States.

The concert in Longville is part of an annual weekend tour that begins the fall concert season.

Al Reesnes is director of the Augsburg Centennial Singers. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augsburg College and a Master of Music Education degree from Mac Phail College of Music.

Reesnes has studied with Fred Waring, Robert Shaw and Roger Wagner. He directed music in Minnesota high schools for 33 years. He received the “Spirit of Augsburg” award from his alma mater this year.

Reesnes has chosen a variety of music for the Longville concert to include classical sacred selections, folk songs, spirituals and barbershop. The program will include several familiar hymns arranged by members of the touring group.

“The Singers are devout men and are serious about their music,” said Reesnes. “They want to sing well, and it is a privilege and honor to direct them.”

The concert is sponsored by Salem Lutheran Church as part of its community outreach ministry. This event concludes Salem’s 2013 summer Music in the Park series.
