Backus American Legion/Auxiliary to host Corn Fest events

The Backus American Leg ion and Auxiliary will sponsor several events in conjunction with the community’s annual Corn Fest Aug. 9-11.

The Legion and Auxiliary, financial sponsors of Corn Fest, will kick off the weekend with a meat raffle at 5:30 p.m. Friday, followed by bingo about 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 10, there will be a horseshoe tournament at 2 p.m. with a $10 entry fee, drawing for partners and a 100 percent payout plus a cash prize supplement from the Legion. Sign up starts at 1 p.m.

There will be a bean bag tournament at 2 p.m. with at 1:30 p.m. Entry fee is $10 for each two-person team. Cash prizes will be awarded for first through third places, with a 100 percent payout plus a cash prize supplement from the Legion.

Saturday events will conclude with free customer and cash drawings at 9 p.m.

Sunday, the Frankie Lamb Band will return to the Legion from 2-6 p.m., playing classic country and pop, old time and swing. The drawing for the Auxiliary’s Corn Fest Raffle, which helps fund the festival and includes 25 prizes, will be at 4 p.m., although winners need not be present.

Following the dance, from 6 p.m. until gone, the Cass County Fair Association will serve a roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy, a vegetable, dinner roll, dessert and coffee for $8 with proceeds going to 4-H prize premiums at the fair.

Also Sunday, the monthly Auxiliary breakfast will be served from 7:30-11:30 a.m. It includes a choice of French toast or pancakes, fried or scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, juice and coffee for $6 for adults and $3 for children under 7. Proceeds go toward active duty troop, veterans, community and other Auxiliary programs.

The main community Corn Fest events are on Saturday and include a parade at 11 a.m., followed by a ham, sweet corn, wild rice hot dish and watermelon feed. There are also kid’s games, a craft and flea market, a beer garden, an evening street dance and fireworks at dusk.
