Posted: July 30, 2013 - 4:26pm

The Lakes Area Music Festival offers a free family concert celebrating water in the Brainerd lakes area at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd.

The concert is intended for the young at heart of all ages. It will begin with a short piece inspired by Carl Orff and played by the children entering grades one through five who will have just completed the music festival’s “Explore Music!” workshop.

Next will be a suite from Handel’s “Water Music,” followed by “Fingal’s Cave” from Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides” overture.

Gavin Price will narrate two movements from “Sea Creatures” by Daniel Kallman: “Puffer Fish” and “Shark.”

Four songs from Alec Roth’s “The Big Wash Cycle” will conclude the program, including songs about a red T-shirt, a lonesome sock, underpants and “The Washing Line Chorus Line.” Baritone John Taylor Ward will perform the songs.

Marlene Pauley will conduct a 30-member orchestra for this event.

The Lakes Area Music Festival, an annual summer series attracting some of the country’s leading orchestral and vocal performers, takes place through Aug. 18 at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd. Concerts are free and feature more than 80 musicians and vocalists as guest artists.
