Rhoda Gilman, a Minnesota historian, will talk about the history of protest in Minnesota at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Lord of Life Church on Fairview Drive in Baxter.

This event, sponsored by the Brainerd Lakes League of Women Voters, is free and open to the public.

The topic is the heart of her newest book, “Stand Up!” published in 2012. She will discuss what makes Minnesotans unique in our approach to protest.

Gilman joined the staff of the Minnesota Historical Society in 1958 as a research assistant on a project related to Ignatius Donnelly, the state’s 19th-century spokesman for Populism. For the next 34 years, as an editor, researcher, writer and administrator, she worked to broaden and deepen knowledge of Minnesota’s history, especially its Indian people and its women.

She has written several books, including “The Story of Minnesota’s Past,” which was originally published as a textbook for middle school students; “Red River Trails” (1979); and a full-length biography, “Henry Hastings Sibley: Divided Heart” (2004), of the state’s first governor.
