The Heartland Symphony Orchestra announces Heather Cornelius and Ava Figliuzzi as this year’s Youth Concerto Competition winners.

“These prodigious talents, on harp and violin, respectively, will impress with their virtuosity and musical maturity,” said HSO Conductor Josh Aerie. “It is young performers like Ava and Heather that ensure a bright future for instrumental art music.”

The two young artists will perform their solos with the orchestra at its spring concert series in Little Falls and Brainerd on April 13 and 14.

Cornelius, 17, Paynesville, is the 2013 Youth Concerto senior category winner.

Figliuzzi, 13, Baxter, is the 2013 Youth Concerto junior category winner.

Each year the Heartland Symphony Orchestra auditions, selects and presents two young artists from its central Minnesota service area to perform solos with the orchestra as a way to nurture their musical growth and performance skills.

Junior category contestants are in ninth grade or below, and senior category contestants are in grades 10-12.

The selected winners are presented in concert with the HSO during the spring concert series, they receive a recording of their performance, and they are each awarded a $100 scholarship to further their musical education.

For more information about this program, call the HSO office at 800-826-1997.

Heartland Symphony Orchestra will celebrate these winners’ talent during the Spring Concert Series, “HSO Goes to the Movies,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Charles Martin Auditorium in Little Falls, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd.

Tickets are available in Little Falls at Great River Arts Association and Little Falls Radio; and in Brainerd at the Brainerd Dispatch and Bridge of Harmony. Tickets are available at the door for all HSO concerts.

Concert ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and free for all youth through high school.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and a grant from the Laura Jane Musser Fund.
