Dakota Homelands topic of Jan. 15 presentation in Crosby

Posted: December 31, 2012 - 6:21pm

An Unlimited Learning presentation from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Heartwood Senior Living in Crosby will focus on the Dakota Homelands, particularly Mnisota Makoce.

Dakota people have lived in what is now Minnesota for thousands of years. The Dakota War of 1862 creates much interest; however, this topic is often presented without a context and without understanding of the resulting impacts of the war.

This presentation will situate 1862 within a broader context including the connection Dakota people have to this place and the impacts that together tell a more complex story of Minnesota.

Presentation will be by Lyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair, visiting professor from the University of Minnesota American Indian Studies.

Unlimited Learning members will be admitted for free; the public is welcome for $5. The Unlimited Learning Absent Narrative Program is made possible, in part, by funding from the Minnesota Humanities Center, St. Paul.
