The Pequot Lakes Patriots baseball team was roughed up by the host Staples-Motley Cardinals by scores of 2-0 and 9-4 in Mid-State Conference action on Friday, May 10.

The Patriots, 0-6 in the conference and 0-8 overall, were scheduled to face Crosby-Ironton in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, May 14, and then travel to Aitkin for a non-conference game on Thursday, May 16.

In the opener, Pequot Lakes was held to just three hits by pitcher Jalen Busker, who struck out seven and walked three to get the win.

The Pequot Lakes Patriots was swept by Park Rapids 9-7 and 11-7 in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader on Thursday, May 2.

The Patriots, 0-2 in the conference and 0-4 overall, were scheduled to face Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, May 7, and then play another Mid-State Conference doubleheader at Staples-Motley at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 10.

In the opener, Pequot Lakes trailed 4-2 after four innings before the Panthers scored five times in the fifth for a 7-3 lead behind four walks and singles by Austin Mesenbrink and Hunter Leslie.

The Pine River-Backus girls’ basketball team’s hopes of making a first state appearance were dashed by Upsala in a 47-41 loss in the Section 5A final on Friday, March 8, at Crosby-Ironton High School.

The Tigers finish 24-5 overall while the Cardinals improve to 26-4 and advance to the Class A state quarterfinals against Bethlehem Academy on Thursday, March 14, at the University of Minnesota’s Williams Arena.

The Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball team’s dream of a third straight trip to state vanished when the second-seeded Patriots lost to top-seeded Crookston 76-67 in the Northeast Subsection 8AA final on Tuesday, March 5, at Bemidji State University.

The Patriots finish the season 19-10 overall while the Pirates advanced to the Section 8AA final where they lost to Pelican Rapids 61-56 in overtime on Friday, March 8.
