Patriots win six of first seven softball games

The Pequot Lakes Patriots finally opened their season by winning six of their first seven games after sweeping a Mid-State Conference doubleheader at Wadena-Deer Creek by scores of 10-0 and 13-3 on Monday, May 6.

The Patriots’ Lindzee Johnson drove in nine runs in the wins over the Wolverines while teammate Katie White belted a grand slam in the second game.

The Patriots, 5-1 in the Mid-State and 6-1 overall, were scheduled to play Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, May 7, before hosting Staples-Motley in another Mid-State Conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10.

Patriots roll past Park Rapids

The Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ basketball team has had their share of illness and injuries this season.

First, senior starter Jordan Redmond had mononucleosis to open the season. Then Tyler Tappe injured his knee, and then Travis Jacobson suffered a severe sprained ankle. And finally sophomore Brandon Hehir was pulled up from the junior varsity team to earn his first varsity start.

But the woes continued for coach Garry Grewe’s squad as Hehir was lost for the season after suffering a broken leg in a snowmobile accident.

Quick start helps Patriots cruise past Panthers 88-47

The Pequot Lakes Patriots girls’ basketball team assumed an early 16-0 lead and cruised past the Park Rapids Panthers 88-47 in a Mid-State Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Kayla Miller had eight points in the early run while teammate Vanessa Lane added six. The Panthers didn’t score until Charity Ridlon hit a 3-point shot with 12:55 left in the opening half.

JV boys' basketball team splits

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity boys’ basketball team split two home games – losing to the Crosby-Ironton Rangers 52-50 on Tuesday, Jan. 8, and then defeating Grand Rapids 51-38 on Thursday, Jan. 10.

Against C-I, the Patriots enjoyed a 25-24 lead at the half. Jack Kreitz scored a game-high 17 points for Pequot Lakes while Connor Davich added 12, Jon Bocklund six, and Brandon Hehir and Jackson Goerges each had four.

Patriots lose to Warrior boys

The visiting Brainerd Warriors remained unbeaten with an 82-38 pounding of the Pequot Lakes Patriots in a non-conference boys’ basketball game on Monday, Jan.14.

The Warriors, who improved to 9-0 overall, and are off to their best start since the 1965-66 season when Brainerd started 10-0. Brainerd took advantage of 39 turnovers to score 40 of their points.

The Patriots, 5-7 overall, are scheduled to host Mid-State Conference opponents in their next two games – facing Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday, Jan. 18, and Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

PL girls 4th at Walker

The Pequot Lakes Patriots lost to Wadena-Deer Creek 58-47 in the third-place game of the Wolfpack girls’ basketball invitational at Walker-Hackensack-Akeley High School on Saturday, Dec. 29.

The Patriots opened the tournament with an 84-47 win over Sebeka. Pequot Lakes then lost to Parkers Prairie 80-60 in the semifinals. Parkers Prairie eventually beat Frazee to win the tournament title.

The Patriots, 7-4 overall after suffering their third loss in four games, are scheduled to next host Perham in a non-conference game at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3.

Unbeaten MI-Buhl edges Patriots 72-71

The Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball team was edged 72-71 by the visiting Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers, unbeaten and the No. 2 ranked team in Class A, in a non-conference game Thursday, Dec. 20.

The Patriots, 6-2 overall, are scheduled to face Sebeka in the first game of the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolfpack tournament at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27.

Patriots beat PR-B, Park Rapids

Travis Jacobson scored a game-high 28 points to lead the visiting Pequot Lakes past Pine River-Backus 69-44 in a non-conference boys’ basketball action on Thursday, Dec. 20.

The Patriots, 4-3 overall, are scheduled to play at the Little Falls tournament on Dec. 28-29. Pequot Lakes will open against Upsala at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28.

Jordan Redmond added 17 points for the Patriots while Beau Howard led the way for the Tigers with 16 points. PR-B drops to 1-6 overall.

The Patriots now own a 17-0 record over Pine River-Backus over the past 11 seasons.

PL girls JV team 6-0

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 6-0 overall after defeating Park Rapids 56-32 on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The Patriots were led in scoring by Hailey Wiebolt with 12 points and Katie Ryan 11.

“We played well (against Park Rapids),” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale. “We’re happy to be unbeaten since we played some tough teams like Thief River Falls, East Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes.”

Patriots beat Panthers

The Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball team improved to 2-0 in the Mid-State Conference and 5-1 overall with a convincing 82-34 win over the host Park Rapids Panthers on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The Patriots were schedule to host a pair of non-conference games this week - Pine River-Backus on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and Mountain Iron-Buhl on Thursday, Dec. 20.

Kayla Miller finished with 26 points while Vanessa Lane had 23 to lead the Patriots.
