Joan Baez: An American icon

On Thursday, June 6, my wife, daughter and I attended the Joan Baez concert at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley.

A concert at the zoo? Yes, it is called Music in the Zoo with 30 acts playing every type of music from folk (Baez) to country (Willie Nelson) to rock (Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) and everything in between this summer.

To baby boomers (1,400 in attendance), Baez is more than a folk singer. We know her as an activist in social and political causes.

Baby Boomers: What it means to be retired

Ask any retired person what it means to be retired, and they may say it means taking a nap any time of the day. Or they may say it means going to bed whenever and getting up at the crack of noon, if wanted. And it could mean just watching TV at all hours of the day.

I’ve spent more time watching TV as I have discovered stations that show the classics. “Mary Tyler Moore,” “Dick Van [filtered word],” “M*A*S*H” and “Gunsmoke” are my favorites. I enjoy going to the computer to look up bios of the old TV stars. I pick up interesting facts that mean nothing to anyone else.

Annette Funicello: An American icon passes

Annette Funicello passed away last week. To many who heard the news it meant the passing of a singer, TV star and movie star.

To us older baby boomers the passing meant much more than that. It was the passing of our childhood innocence. It was the passing of America’s sweetheart — an American Icon. There was something about Annette that can not be described in today’s terms.

Loge named Road Crew's most valuable wrestler

Senior Drey Loge was recently honored as most valuable wrestler at the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew team banquet.

Loge finished with 207 team points to help the Road Crew advance to the section semifinals. Loge also finished fourth in the state and ends his career with 142-42 record. He also led the Road Crew in pins with 24, and was also the winner of the MWCA Scholarship award (only five were given out at state).

Loge places 4th at state tournament

The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew senior Drey Loge finished fourth at the Class AA state individual tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Loge, who had a 42-3 record this season and was ranked second in his 145-pound weight class, finishes his high school career with 142 wins and two trips to state as an individual.

Another state qualifier for the Road Crew was Anthony Philipson, who did not place but won two matches at 106 pounds. The junior finishes the season 32-6 overall in his second trip to state.

Two Road Crew wrestlers going to state

Junior Anthony Philipson placed first while Drey Loge was second for the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew at the Section 8AA meet on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, in Fergus Falls.

Both wrestlers advance to state individual competition, which begins for Class AA wrestlers at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 1, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Philipson, who is 30-4 overall at 106 pounds, will face sophomore Jaxon Sommers of Totino Grace, 32-8, in the first round at state while Loge, 39-1 overall at 145 pounds, opens against Bryon senior Brett Bradford, 37-5.

Lakers upset Road Crew in semifinals

The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team was defeated by the Detroit Lakes Lakers 33-22 in the Section 8AA semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 16, in Thief River Falls.

The Road Crew had defeated East Grand Forks 69-9 earlier in the day in the section quarterfinals. Detroit Lakes was then defeated by defending champion Perham 36-26 in the section final.

“We had opportunities and gave up points late in the match,” Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth said of the loss to the Lakers. “We need to work harder this week to get ready for section individuals.”

Road Crew places 2nd at Morris Invitational

Anthony Philipson, Nick Gravdahl, and Drey Loge all won titles to help the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestlers finished second at the Morris Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The Road Crew is scheduled to compete at Section 8AA team event on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Thief River Falls, and in the section individual wrestling on Feb. 22-23, at Fergus Falls.

Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunberg, ranked No. 5 in the state in Class A, was first with 264.5 while the Road Crew were second with 177.

Road Crew edged by Grand Rapids

A dual meet against Grand Rapids was tied, but the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team lost by criteria 34.33 to 33.33 in non-conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

“We had a lot of different opportunities to get one more team point throughout the dual,” said Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth. “Grand Rapids is a really good team, but I think we let one slip away. We still have room for a lot of improvement, and losing stokes the fire inside.”

Road Crew win Mid-State title

Drey Loge earned his 125th career win and captured the 145-pound championship to help the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew claim the Mid-State Conference title on Friday, Jan. 25. Loge was chosen most valuable wrestler for the conference.

The Road Crew had four other champions - Anthony Philipson, Nate Adkins, Nick Gravdahl and Justin Mackenthun.

PL/PR-B finished with 218 points, followed by Detroit Lakes with 213, Staples-Motley 95, Crosby-Ironton 94, Park Rapids 77 and Wadena-Deer Creek 75.5.
