Corliss John Holley — better known in the lakes area as Cork — has lived in many different places, but he always returned to his hometown of Pequot Lakes.

Cork was born on a dairy farm two miles west of Pequot Lakes on Feb. 28, 1933. Today — Thursday, Feb. 28 — he celebrates his 80th birthday at his home on Brown Street, not so far from where his life began. His parents, Arlo and Marvel Holley, farmed on what is now 13th Avenue off of County Road 17.

A local option sales tax, liquor ordinance amendment and 2013 projects were discussed briefly Wednesday, Feb. 13, when the Nisswa City Council met in a work session.

Council member Jan Pierce was absent.

Legislative update

City planner Loren Wickham gave the council a brief legislative update, noting the council has discussed the possibility of a local option sales tax in the past. Voters must approve such a tax, and then the Legislature must authorize it.

Guests entering Senior Class Care assisted living facility in Pequot Lakes on Thursday, Feb. 14, immediately found themselves in a makeshift “chapel.”

Residents and guests sat on either side of the white aisle strewn with pink paper petals that flower girl Honor St. John dropped there.

The front of the “chapel” was adorned with streamers, balloons, bows, bells and flowers. Soft piano music wafted into the room that included three couples who have been married for a combined 130 years.

The mood was festive.
