Shadow, police K-9, retired

Shadow, the Pequot Lakes Police Department’s K-9 dog, was retired Jan. 31, the city council learned Tuesday, March 5.

“The dog is at the end of his useful life cycle,” said police chief Eric Klang, noting the department planned to look at the K-9 program as part of its strategic planning.

The city will offer to sell Shadow to police officer Josh Gartner, his handler, for $1.

“Shadow has been a real asset to the department for his working life, and your service with Shadow has been appreciated by the community,” Klang wrote in a letter to Gartner.

Council seeks reinstatement of $20,000 in library funding

The Pequot Lakes City Council on Tuesday, March 5, adopted a resolution in support of materials funding for the Kitchigami Regional Library System (KRLS) affiliate libraries in Crosslake and Pequot Lakes.

This action comes after the Crow Wing County Board voted to reduce the KRLS budget by $20,000. The KRLS board, in turn, voted to cut $20,000 from the 2013 budget for materials expenditures for the Crosslake and Pequot Lakes affiliate libraries.

Area cities are requesting the KRLS board reinstate the $20,000 for the Crosslake and Pequot Lakes libraries in 2013.

Water, sewer fees restructured

The Pequot Lakes City Council on Tuesday, March 5, adopted new water and sewer ordinances that originated from the Economic Development Commission’s request to study fee structures.

The city hired Widseth Smith Nolting (WSN), the city’s engineering firm, to help study the city’s Water Availability Charges (WAC) and Sewer Availability Charges (SAC). These charges will be based on Equivalent Residential Connections (ERCs).

Based on WSN’s study, the council also amended the WAC fees from $2,200 to $2,900 per ERC and the SAC fees from $8,000 to $6,300 per ERC.

Newspapers In Education Week is celebrated annually during the first full school week in March (March 4-8, 2013).

Newspapers In Education (NIE) is an international program that uses the newspaper as a teaching tool to promote and increase children’s literacy. NIE is a unique way for schools, businesses and the local newspaper to work together in a partnership that benefits everyone.

Pequot Lakes: Highway 371 project addressed

Pequot Lakes Mayor Nancy Adams asked the legislators what they could do to help make sure the Highway 371 four-lane expansion project doesn’t get delayed again.

“Pequot Lakes has been very quiet because we knew two projects were ahead in the pecking order, and then we were next,” Adams said.

Recently, she learned that suddenly two other vocal groups supporting their own highway projects had jumped ahead of the Highway 371 project.

“I think for the economy of this town, for the residents of the town, this is very disturbing,” Adams said.

Nisswa: Resorter shares concerns

Mark Ronnei, Grand View Lodge, asked legislators to carefully consider a proposed minimum wage increase. While he supports an increase, Ronnei asked legislators to consider a tip credit (a credit against the business’ minimum wage obligation to the employee) and a 90-day wage that applies to 16- to 18-year-olds.

“I’m their first employer so we need a training wage for them. They don’t know what it means to work. They don’t get it,” Ronnei said, asking why young teens should be paid the same as employees with more experience who are more productive.

Breezy Point: Weapons, education discussed

Emily resident Kent Rees said at the Breezy Point forum that firearms, knives, baseball bats and other weapons of violence must be addressed, as well as the way mentally ill people are handled and treated.

He told the story of his recovering granddaughter, who was stabbed three times by a mentally ill person while pumping gas at a gas station in another city.

“We have a violence problem,” he said. “You get a different perspective to it when it occurs directly to you.”

Legislative 'team' visits Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Breezy Point

A lakes area “team” of legislators that includes members of both political parties assured constituents they are working together at the Capital for outstate Minnesota.

“We listened at the last election when people said they were tired of partisan bickering,” District 10 state Sen. Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point, said at town hall forums in Nisswa, Pequot Lakes and Breezy Point on Saturday, March 2. “We are really working hard to make a great team for Greater Minnesota, because we are different from the legislators down in the Cities.

Lake Shore to budget more for fire protection in 2014

The Lake Shore City Council agreed to contract with the Nisswa Fire Department for 2013 for $57,006, which includes the cost of the Firemen’s Relief Association ($4,863).

The city budgeted $57,000 in 2013 for fire services.

The council learned that the fire department is now carrying out First Responder duties after the Nisswa-Lake Shore First Responders dissolved. This means Lake Shore will have to increase its fire services budget by at least $7,500 in 2014.

Nisswa receives requests for tap room

The Nisswa City Council on Wednesday, Feb. 20, set a public hearing for 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, to amend the liquor ordinance to allow for a brewer/tap room license.

The city has been approached a couple of times in the past couple of months about locating a microbrewery/tap room in the city. The city has the authorization to issue a license for this, but would have to amend the liquor ordinance and land use ordinance to authorize the use.

Such a business would not compete with the city’s municipal liquor establishment, council members have said.
