The Pequot Lakes City Council continues to study the differential in the city’s urban and rural taxing districts, which was identified earlier this year in a visioning session where the council pinpointed key issues and projects.

The Economic Development Committee (EDC) received council approval Tuesday, April 2, to spend $1,500 to hire Springsted to complete an analysis and study of the two taxing districts with the concept of combining them. The EDC first wants to determine the impact of combining the tax districts on properties.

Pequot Lakes High School junior Angela Cole was crowned Miss Pequot Lakes onFriday, April 5, in the high school auditorium.

Cheyenne Wilson, a senior, was crowned princess. Malyssa Engren, a junior,was chosen Miss Congeniality.

Fourth-grade escorts are Katie Nelson, queen escort; Leah Johnson, princessescort; and Megan Buffington, Miss Congeniality escort.

Other contestants were juniors Sarah Rudlang and Madison Davis-Biessener.Their escorts were fourth-graders Maliah Carlson and Jackalyn Fox.

Temporary stoplights are in place. Temporary lanes exist to keep traffic flowing. Orange signs warning of construction are in place. Crews are ready to go.

As soon as the snow melts and weather permits, work will begin once again on Highway 371 through Nisswa.

Stage 1 was done last year: The realignment of County Road 18 was completed, and trees were removed and lanes widened north of the Hazelwood Drive-Main Street stoplight to prepare for work on Highway 371.

Stage 2 of the $7 million project entails much more:

Some enjoy the deer that wander through their yards; others think deer are a nuisance.

Speaking as liaison of the Environmental Committee, Lake Shore City Council member Doug Miller asked Monday, March 25, about the possibility of having a controlled deer hunt in the city.

“Some people have complained about the number of deer,” Miller said.

City administrator Teri Hastings said the city gets some deer complaint calls at city hall.
