The Crosslake Community Center will soon be home to four new tennis courts, which will be constructed this summer. Jon Henke, director of parks, recreation and library, said the project of constructing new tennis courts began in 2005.

The two original tennis courts were built in 1974, Henke said, and a third court was added in 1987. The average lifespan of tennis courts is 20 years, and these courts lasted as long as 38 years.

“So they were long overdue to be replaced,” Henke said.

Many people might not realize, though, that the Pequot Lakes American Legion Post 49 is named for Ben Krueger, a local man who lost his life in World War I.

Six area men died in service during World War I. John Carlson, Grant Young, Levi Richmond, William Olson, Charlie Ferguson and Ben Krueger served their country and did not make it home. Most died in combat; Richmond died of diphtheria on a ship coming back to the United States.

Emily Fire Chief Kenny Roden reported responding to two grass fires Tuesday, May 14. At 6:20 p.m. the department responded to a call for a fire off Blue Lake Road, which Roden said burned 5-10 acres.

Roden said the fire started north of a gravel pit. While he was unsure of the cause, he said there had been burning at the site a month or so ago, and that it’s possible stumps had been smoldering underground.

No people or buildings were harmed. Fifty Lakes and Crooked Lake departments also responded to the fire.

Heritage House expanding in Pequot

Heritage House in Pequot Lakes broke ground Friday, May 17, on a new building with 20 suites, adding to its current 54-room facility.

Jane Pantzke, manager, said the senior living facility has a full-time chef, 24-hour nursing staff, a full-time RN on site and an activities coordinator.

The new building will have an up-north feel similar to the current buildings, and each suite will have its own refrigerator and bathroom.
