The sixth-ranked Pine River-Backus Tigers softball team was edged 7-5 by the No. 3 Sebeka Trojans in the first round of the North Subsection 6A playoffs on Tuesday, May 21, in Menahga.

The Tigers came out in the top of the first inning and scored four runs. Morgan Demars got on base on a double, Liz Downie walked and both had stolen bases. Tatum Sheley singled to load the bases and Autumn Ackerman followed with a two-run single to score Demars and Downie. Journee Howard then hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Sheley.

The Pine River-Backus Tigers baseball team went on a five-game win streak with their most recent win coming against the Northland Eagles 6-5 on Friday, May 17.

The Tigers are now 6-2 in the Northwoods Conference and 7-3 overall. Their final regular season games were a conference doubleheader against Nevis that was postponed from Monday, May 20, to Tuesday, May 21.

The Pine River-Backus Tigers’ baseball team played their season opener against the Menahga Braves Monday, May 6, in Pine River, and suffered their first loss 14-3. Menahga was the first to score as they got a run in the top of the second inning. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the third as Jared Adkins came home on a double by Nick Gravdahl.

The second-seeded Pine River-Backus Tigers girls’ basketball team advanced to the East Subsection 5A championship game against top-seeded Isle on Tuesday, March 5, in McGregor after easily defeating the first two teams they faced in the playoffs. That winner advances to the Section 5A game on Friday, March 8, at Crosby-Ironton.

The Tigers, 23-4 overall, crushed Northland of Remer 90-38 on Thursday, Feb. 28 in their first playoff game, and then beat East Central 83-45 in the subsection semifinals on Saturday, March 2.
